SATURDAY MORNING SIZZLER: AGHADERG U-13 FOOTBALLERS LEAVE THE BEST TO LAST AS LATE GOAL RUSH CLINCHES FINAL SPOT.

Date Filed: 17 September 2020

Aghaderg U-13 Footballers took to the field against Burren this morning in the South Down Shield semi-final. The game started at a blistering pace with Aghaderg having plenty of possession but being held out by a hungry Burren backline who displayed some excellent tackling. When in possession, Burren moved the ball quickly with some very smart running off the ball resulting in some stylish scores.
Aghaderg kept their cool and worked hard to take some fine scores of their own with Brogan Brackenbury taking a great goal, a nice point from Harry Patterson and some well worked points from a tightly marked Daniel McKernan. Burren came back strong at the end of the first half, with Conor Comiskey, James McSherry, Aaron Keenan and James McShane working hard under intense pressure to deal with the pace and hunger Burren were showing. Aghaderg went in three points up at half time but in truth had enough possession to be further ahead.

Half time: Aghaderg 1-5 Burren 0-5.

Burren dominated the first period of the second half taking a good goal and several further points to move into a 5 point lead and at this stage looked the more likely to win this game Although Aghaderg looked out of sorts in some areas they were seeing opportunities with Eoin Brackenbury beginning to get the better of his Burren counterpart down the right hand side. Aghaderg changed players in several positions at the water break and then things clicked. Jake McCourt and Owain McGrath moved into the back line with Cillian Muckian moving forward to half back and linking up beautifully with the hardworking Conor Comiskey and Conor McQuaid in midfield. Sean Devlin began to find space in the half forward line and helped set up some fine points. Aghaderg began to pressure the Burren kick-out with Aaron Keenan and Conor Comiskey winning a lot of ball and setting up attacks. A fine long ball into the forward line from Cillian Muckian resulted in a great goal taken by Daniel McKernan. Burren struck back with a goal of their own but Aghaderg had the bit between their teeth and were driving forward in numbers. Anytime Burren got forward Owain McGrath and Jake McCourt dealt with it, with Jake using his pace to carry the ball back into the Burren half. Aghaderg finished strongly with two further goals from Daniel McKernan clinching a well-deserved victory.

Final Score: Aghaderg 4-8 Burren 1-12
.

Plenty to work on for this young team but a great show of hunger and determination to come from behind and hold on for the win in an entertaining game that had the hearts racing.

Aghaderg now face Longstone in the South Down Shield Final next Saturday.
