Aghaderg men to the fore in fightback

Date Filed: 23 August 2011

Our under 16 footballers took on Burren in this massive championship  task on Thurs evening. Played in super conditions both teams began in a spirited game. Burren went three points ahead but then our lads settled into the game with a period of excellent football in which the influence of Shane Donnelly at centre half back was beginning to dominate. The game was levelled thanks to the superb football skills of Michael Fitzpatrick. His tireless work rate and carrying the ball forward was a real treat to watch. His finishing was highly impressive with various well taken scores from different angles.

However, as has been common this year we conceded 2 goals before half time and another immediately after the restart. This was a massive blow but the true character of this team showed as they began a terrific fight back. Again Aghaderg lads Donnelly and Fitzpatrick were very much to the fore. The team actually out score Burren in the second half but with a missed penalty and a few good saves from the Burren keeper the goals that were really needed did not come. Having had to endure continual pressure ,  Burren ended up winners 3-11 to 0-13 at the final whistle.

The management were extremely proud of the performance of the team against this top opposition.

It is very credible that on the evidence of both Shane Donnelly and Michael Fitzpatrick consistent performances  all year against such quality teams that these  young men could represent this parish in the colours of County Down at minor level in a couple of years time. The experience they are attaining at this level is invaluable.
