Slow Starts Costs 'Reds' Dearly!
Date Filed:
29 June 2011
Ballyvarley looked stiff and saddle sore after their long journey to the Ards and, although almost at full strength, they never really got going in this key hurling league clash. A hesitant start from the Reds saw a mediocre Ballygalget side slip smoothly into a four point lead and even though Niall Savage and Paul O’Neill replied with two fine points from play the momentum was all with the home side. Three converted sixty fives from Paul O’Neill and another point from Patrick Mackin brought the sides level and promised much for the Reds as their confidence grew but then came an episode of comical defending by the visitors rearguard which ended with the ball trickling over the line for Ballygalget’s opening goal.
The goal spoke volumes for Ballyvarley’s defensive frailties on the night and succeeded in turning the game on its head as Ballygalget went on to rattle home a further one goal and six points with embarrassing ease, whereas the Red’s lack of penetration up front was summed up with a solitary point from James McGrath.
Half time: Ballygalget 2-10 Ballyvarley 0-7
The Reds played much better after the break and put together some neat attacking moves but the only scoring threat was posed by Paul O’Neill who was hauled down every time he advanced on goal and he was left with the dubious consolation of tapping the resultant frees over the bar. Ballygalget were less dominant in this period but were still able to slot over seven more points from play and when the referee blew the game up early, due to a serious injury to a Ballygalget forward, there was little chance of the Reds hauling the deficit back. In the midst of a disappointing Ballyvarley performance Sean Kennedy gave a superb display of sharp stick-work and long striking and he was ably supported by good displays from Adam Twohig, Steven Daly, Ciaran Connolly and Paul O’Neill.
