Ballyvarley Hurlers Leave Comeback too Late

Date Filed: 13 May 2011

Ballyvarley U12 hurlers travelled to Castlewellan hoping to build on an impressive second half showing from their last match against Bredagh. As it turned out the reds failed to turn up for the first half of this game and were anonymous all over the field as Castlewellan piled on the pressure and ended the half leading 5.3 to no score.

Stern words from the coach at half time woke the young hurlers up and they started to play the game they are all capable of. Shortly after the restart Niall Lennon crashed the ball to the net quickly followed by a fine point from Liam Conlon. It was all one way traffic now although the reds were panicking an missing easy chances. Liam added another couple of fine points  and Callum McConville added a long range goal to leave the reds only three scores behind. The reds continued to pile on the pressure and poor accuracy denied them. Sterling work by Paddy McGrath and Ronan Malumphy snuffed out any Castlewellan attacks although they did score a fortunate goal on one rare attack. Niall Lennon added another goal for the reds as time ran out.
Final score Castlewellan 5.3 Ballyvarley 3.3.
A good performance from Conor Brolly in the backline was the only point of note in a forgettable first half. All the players stood up well in the second half with Ronan Malumphy outstanding in the back line and a good performance up front from Niall Lennon.
