Match Report

MCGRATH’S LAST TEN MINUTES EFFORT JUST FALLS SHORT.

Date Filed: 20 July 2010

Aghaderg welcomed St Michaels to Ballyvarley on Monday night in a rearranged league match. The conditions were well suited to a fast open game of football and St Michaels were first on the scoreboard with a point from play. Eugene Devlin then pointed a free as he was hauled down when going through. St Michaels were winning the midfield battle and their wing half backs were offering a lot of support. Paul McGrath in goal was proving safe under the high ball and made one brilliant save when he finger tipped a shot onto the crossbar which was then cleared by full back Lennon.. The full back line was under intense pressure for much of the second quarter but continued to defend well. McAlorum, Lennon and Fitzpatrick were all in excellent form. Devlin made a quick break through the visitors defence and was unlucky to see his shot come back off the crossbar. St Michaels kept the scoreboard ticking over and at half time were leading 0-6 to 0-2.

At half time management had to reshuffle the team as Ciaran Connolly had to retire injured. Mark McGrath was introduced, James McGrath was moved to full forward, Niall McAlinden to mid field and Doyle to left half back. Aghaderg were finding it difficult to win good ball at mid field and the visitors were threatening to run away with the game. Three quick points put St Michaels in a secure lead but Devlin tagged on a point from play, The visitors then finished off a goal when many of the home defence were committed forward and Devlin appeared to be fouled in possession. Aghaderg however were beginning to dominate midfield as Fitzimons began to impose himself in this area. McAvoy and McGivern were also becoming more prominent. McAvoy scored his first point of the season but St Michaels again replied with a goal. James McGrath was winning most of the high ball against the visitors full back line. After combining with Devlin he was unlucky to have his shot on goal blocked. He then scored a fine point from play and set up Doyle for a goal to narrow the gap. He won a free which was converted by Devlin and then signed off with a goal and a point to cap a magnificent ten minutes of football. Unfortunately time ran out and St Michaels collected the two league points.

Aghaderg were short three of their most influential players, Cathal McGrath and Stevie Comiskey due to work commitments while Kieran Maguire was starred as Down minors are due to play Tyrone in the semi final of the Ulster championship on Saturday.
