Match Report
AGHADERG BY DOUBLE SCORES
Date Filed:
20 July 2010
Aghaderg welcomed Dromara to Ballyvarley on Friday night last in the penultimate league fixture before the two week Summer break. Dromara had shaded the first league match but most Aghaderg supporters felt that they had been fortunate were looking forward to an opportunity redress the balance. The match commenced with Aghaderg winning most of the primary possession but were having difficulty in turning the possession into scores. A number of good opportunities were to go astray in the first quarter as the final pass was off target or the wrong option was chosen. Comiskey opened the scoring with a fine point after the ball went through a number of hands and then turned provider as he set McDonald up with a goal opportunity. Shay made no mistake with a fine right footed shot into the net from 20 yards. Fitzsimons pointed after a fine crossfield ball from Maguire found him in acres of space. Maguire from a free stretched the lead to six points before Dromara opened their account with a free after twenty three minutes. Aghaderg dominated the final ten minutes as the half back line of McGivern, Cathal McGrath, Doyle and the mid field duo of James McGrath and Fitzsimons totally dominated proceedings and supplied the forward line with regular quality ball. Fitzsimons scored a second goal, Devlin got his first score of the game, Maguire scored a second free and McAlinden finished the Aghaderg scoring with a point. Dromara were given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty and their goalkeeper made the long trek forward as he had done in the first match in Dromara.. Then it was from thirteen metres and Paul McGrath saved it. However the odds are now more in favour of the penalty taker as the penalty spot has been moved into eleven metres and the Dromara ‘keeper got his own back as he finished comfortably to the corner of the net to leave the half time score
Aghaderg 2 -6 Dromara 1- 1
The second half commenced at a frantic pace as Dromara attempted to make inroads on the eight point deficit. The visitors tagged on two quick points but Maguire steadied the home nerves with a magnificent point from a free close to the sideline and maintained the eight point gap with a point from play as he linked up twice with Comiskey to point from play. James McGrath retired injured and was replaced by promising minor, Tony Hegarty, with Maguire going to mid-field. Devlin scored his second point of the evening and then Hegarty scored a superb goal when he caught a ball on the edge of the square, turned and finished in a flash before a Dromara defender could lay a hand on him. Devlin scored another point and then after good work from McAlinden and Hegarty Devlin was given an opportunity for a run on goal, he skinned his marker and finished with an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. The match was now over as a contest but Dromara kept plugging away and were rewarded with a second goal from a well struck shot from twenty metres flew into the top corner in spite of McGrath,s best endeavours.
This was a satisfying win as Aghaderg dominated throughout the field and were comfortable winners by
4 -10 to 2 -5.
