Great Performance From A Depleted 'Reds'

Date Filed: 25 May 2010

A Ballyvarley team depleted by injury put in a tremendous performance against Leitrim on their own ground. Fearing the worst, Ballyvarley played much better than expected and took the game to Leitrim and were unfortunate not to be ahead by half time. Four pointed frees from Paul O’Neill and a great point from Niall Savage saw Ballyvarley take the lead three times in the first half and were unlucky to be behind by one point at the interval.
Half time: Leitrim 0-6  Ballyvarley 0-5
Ballyvarley continued their stout resistance in the second half and once again Niall Savage was to the fore combining well with Paul O’Neill and firing over two more geat points from play. A Colin O’Neill goal and another pointed free from Paul O’Neill kept the Reds in touch with Leitrim throughout the half but a late flurry of a goal and three points from the home side pushed the issue beyond Ballyvarley’s reach. It was a great performance from a Reds team that was depleted on paper but performed with courage on the field. Cathal O’Neill was superb in goals and the entire defence were strong throughout.
Final score:  Leitrim 1-17   Ballyvarley 1-8
