Ballyvarley’s Hurling Skills Promotional Day Saturday 3rd August.

06 August 2013

Ballyvarley’s Hurling Skills Promotional Day proved to be an outstanding success as the club’s juvenile hurling and camogie players gathered with their families to participate in the day’s events.

Michael Scullion demonstrated the ancient art of hurling stick manufacture and presented a specially engraved hurl to the Chairman of the Hurling Sub-Committee, Gerard O’Neill, to mark the occasion.

The arrival of Down captain Paul Braniff and team-mates Conor Woods, Stephen Keith and Danny Toner with the Christy Ring Cup was a highlight of the day and families had their cameras at the ready to avail of every photographic opportunity and to get jerseys, hurls and souvenir programmes autographed.

The juvenile players then had the experience of being coached by the County Players in the skills of ball-winning, striking, side-line cuts, free-taking, goalkeeping and shooting for goal as they rotated around four coaching stations for two hours. The young players also had the special thrill of playing alongside the County players in a special challenge game against the Club’s coaches and it took a stunning goal from Stephen Keith to bring a narrow victory for the Juveniles against stubborn opposition. Throughout the day everyone was royally entertained by the ladies committee who served refreshments and food in the Hall.
