1975 Down Junior Hurling Champions 50th Anniversary

14 September 2025

Today, we had the honour of celebrating the 1975 Down Junior Hurling Champions – marking 50 years since Ballyvarley won their very first title.

Players from that historic team, along with their families, gathered in Ballyvarley Hall to reconnect, share memories, and celebrate the achievements of a very special time in our club’s history. We also paused to remember those who are sadly no longer with us, while cherishing the many great moments that defined hurling in the 1970s.

The evening featured inspiring words from Gerard O’Neill, who gave a wonderful history of hurling in Ballyvarley, and from past county chair, Jack Devaney. We thank them both sincerely for their contributions.
We were also delighted to have our club president, Gerard McGrath – himself a great hurler in his time – present a small gift to each of the past players as a token of appreciation.

The day was a huge success, with over 100 family and friends coming together to celebrate our oldest sport.
It was truly heart-warming to see so many people enjoying the occasion.

A special thanks to everyone who helped organise this memorable event, and to Harry’s Bar for providing top-class food.

Ballyvarley is extremely proud of its history, and it is wonderful to continue honouring the men who paved the way for today’s players.
