First match in the Betsy Gray Cup was away to Bredagh on a fine night for hurling and Ballyvarley got off to the worst possible start with a goal straight from the throw in and were four points down within 5 minutes but they gradually clawed it back to two points after 20 minutes with points from Johnny lennon and several from Matthew Malone. Both teams traded points to leave it four points to the home team at half time with the aid of a strong breeze.
Ballyvarley held the majority of the play in the second half and with 10 minute to go were only two points down but conceded a goal and several points in the last 10 minutes .
Playing with the wind Ballyvarley wasted a lot of ball in the third quarter over the end line whilst Bredagh throughout were extremely disciplined giving just two frees away in their own half and four across the whole game .
It’s vital that going forward we learn to play over the 60 minutes and make use of the prevailing wind and play the ball through the lines like they did in the first half.
Bredagh 2-16 Ballyvarley 0-15
