Awesome Aghaderg blunt Bredagh blitz!

Date Filed: 20 August 2020

Aghaderg played unbeaten Bredagh on Wednesday night in round 4 of the U12 league campaign. Bredagh were strong favourites, given that they had blitzed all challengers in the previous 3 matches by a combined total of 55 points!

The weather conditions were awful, but this didn’t impact on the young Aghaderg girls who battled from the first whistle to the last to edge a dramatic encounter on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-8.

Aghaderg started on the front foot and edged ahead of Bredagh with 2 fine points from Clodagh Simpson & Cliondhna McGrath, but were soon pegged back by the Belfast girls. A pointed effort by Clodagh Simpson dropped short and ended up in the back of the net, which brought the Reds back in front. Bredagh continued to press and although they had the majority of possession, couldn’t penetrate the Aghaderg goal, as Cara McAuley made a number of important saves. She was well supported by a resolute full back line including Emma O’Kane, Sarah Morgan and Sarah McGrath. They restricted Bredagh to pointed efforts for the remainder of the half, with Lauren Devlin patrolling the half back line along with Tara McQuaid and Caoimhe Keenan.

Half Time:
Aghaderg 1-2, Bredagh 0-3

The second half followed a similar pattern, with great performances from Niamh McGrath, Orlaith Burns and debutant Rose McArdle. Macie Haggart moved from midfield to goalkeeper for the second half and made some important saves to keep the all important clean sheet. Eilidh O’Neill linked well with Aoife McGrady, Caragh Simpson and Lucy Lennon to create scoring opportunities. Bredagh edged themselves in front, but after some relentless Aghaderg pressure, Cara McAuley toe poked a loose ball into the Bredagh net to give the girls a deserved 2 point lead. The remaining 5 minutes were played at a ferocious pace with neither team holding back. However, the Aghaderg girls held strong, with some match saving blocks and tackles at the back to secure a 2 point victory!

Final Score:
Aghaderg 2-4, Bredagh 0-8

Well done girls and thanks to all the parents for bringing the girls tonight in terrible conditions.

Next match is on Wednesday 26th August at home to Clann na Banna.
