U12 LADIES FIGHT OUT EXCITING DRAW WITH GLENN

Date Filed: 24 July 2020

AGHADERG 5-8 GLENN 6-5

Wednesday night saw the return of ladies football to Aghaderg in the first round of the U12 girls league against local rivals Glenn. The match started at a frantic pace with both teams fresh from the extended layoff. Glenn were first to strike, with an early goal, but Aghaderg were soon on the front foot and added 2 majors from midfield duo Cliondhna McGrath and Lauren Devlin, whilst the dangerous Clodagh Simpson tagged on a number of points. Glenn kept the pressure on, adding a goal and a number of points before the short whistle. This left the half time score at 2-5 to 2-4 in favour of Aghaderg.

The first half performance was very promising, with good defensive work from Emma O’Kane & Lauren Connelly repelling countless Glenn attacks. In addition, debutants Aoife McGrady, Macie Haggart, Sarah McGrath & Carragh Simpson performed exceptionally well.

The second half started with Glenn in the ascendancy and they started to build a lead on the young Reds. However, driven forward by Sarah Morgan, Lucy Lennon and Niamh McGrath in defence, Aghaderg began to fight back. Eilidh O’Neill and Orlaith Burns worked tirelessly in attack, ably assisted by twin sisters Orla & Amy Fullerton. Amy also chipped in with a fine score. Despite the Aghaderg pressure, the Glenn attack were able to move their noses in front with a fortuitous goal with a few minutes remaining to put them 3 points ahead. However, some excellent play by Tara McQuaid created a late opportunity for Cara McAuley to power through and finish with great accuracy via the underside of the crossbar to bring the sides level right on the 20 minute mark. The final whistle was sounded immediately after the resulting goal kick was taken and both teams had to settle for a draw, which in hindsight was a fair result.

The management team were delighted with the effort of the girls and very proud of their performance. The match was refereed by Gregory McGrath, who allowed the game to flow in a very fair manner.

The girls next match is against Tullylish on Wednesday 5th August in Tullylish.

Training continues on Sunday at 12.30pm.
