AGHADERG WIN U-14 CAMOGIE 12 A-SIDE CHAMPIONSHIP
Date Filed:
02 September 2008
As the mist lifted off the Mournes, the Aghaderg U-14 camogie team took to the pitch to play Attical on home territory in the final of the U14 championship.
Starting with the same team that beat Kilcoo in the semi final earlier in the week the reds where soon into the game with the play back and forward down the pitch but scores where hard to come by in the heavy conditions. Laura Stewart at centre half forward kept pushing at the Attical goal whilst Mary Kate McGrath was resilient at midfield. Attical threatened several times in the first half to be cut out by some strong central defending by Captain Sinead O Meara, whilst no loose ball was allowed, by the wing defenders of Aideen Colgan and Laura Fletcher.
The ultimate break through came with a long clearance by Laura Stewart to the forward line and Janine McGrath did sterling work to keep the ball in play and passed back to Hannah Malone who drove the ball from an acute angle to the corner of the Attical net. There was some determined defending by Ciara Lennon, who made some fine tackles to avert the Attical threat whilst Haley Lennon and Aiobhin McKay worked tirelessly at Mid Field. A long free from Mary Kate found the Attical net again only to be disallowed for a square ball close to the end of the first half.
Half Time:
Attical 0-0, Aghaderg 1-0.
The second half started with Rebecca Fletcher replacing her sister and Aghaderg were soon on target again, a driving run from Laura Stewart who was superb throughout, gave a long pass right into the goal mouth and Janine McGrath gave Aghaderg a well earned second goal. Attical however, were not to be outdone and after some super saves from Danielle Stewart Attical found the net. The pressure was now on with wave after wave of Attical attack, Kitty Cranney replaced Aiobhin McKay and Aghaderg fought with tremendous spirit, Sarah Rafferty worked hard in the second half and the team again regained control to finish strongly.
This was a superb team effort in heavy long grass not ideal for underage Camogie but the spirit shown from every single player was admiral with all giving 100%.
Final Score:
Attical 1-0, Aghaderg 2-0
Sinead O Meara proudly received the cup and thanked the Attical team for an excellent game.
